What is a chandelier?
By definition, a chandelier light is a multi-branch light fitting, suspended from a ceiling. They have been around for many years, with the first notable mentions being made in the 1700s. Throughout the years, the way in which a chandelier is lit has changed with the times; first lit by candles, then gas, and now using LED bulbs.
Although the public perception of this lighting style is one of extreme grandeur, large feature pieces and branches adorned with crystals, there are many petite and understated chandeliers also available. With modern chandeliers comes the ability to completely customise the fitting to suit you.
Different types of chandelier lights
Chandelier lights are available in both modern and antique styles.
Metal
Chandeliers don’t necessarily need to be adorned with crystals. Fittings such as brass chandeliers can create an impact in a room that is just as striking as its crystal counterpart.
As the name suggests, these chandeliers are composed of metal, but the type of metal can vary. Common types are brass, bronze, iron and silver. This variation makes them great for matching with existing hardware within a room. For example, a large feature chandelier in an entrance hall could be composed of a metal that is cohesive with the finish of door handles or wall features.
Crystal
Crystal chandelier lights are available in both modern and antique styles. This is a style that many may be familiar with, and may even be the first image that comes to mind when thinking of chandeliers. Recognisable for arms dressed with gorgeous crystal droplets, they create a fantastic focal point within a space such as a grand hall or dining room. During the day, the stunning effect created by sunlight refracting through the crystal droplets creates interesting patterns across the room, an effect that is mirrored by the light from the LED bulbs during the night.
Modern
Modern chandeliers offer a certain flexibility that is not often available with antiques. Contemporary designs can be customised to suit your preferred size and metal finish, making them a great choice for those with a specific look in mind. Furthermore, modern chandeliers can even be made bathroom safe, like with our range of ip44 bathroom chandeliers!
The allure of a modern chandelier is its ability to create just as much of a statement as a antique or vintage chandelier, with a lower cost and being able to have many fittings that look identical.
Antique & Vintage
Antique chandeliers can be completely unique and come with an interesting history that really adds character to the piece. Sometimes it’s better to stand out from the rest, and an antique chandelier fitting can do just that.
